Combat Workplace Stress with Effective Techniques

Health and wellbeing is not a new topic but an important one. Unfortunately, it is often ignored due to its lack of in-depth understanding. No job or industry is easy. I have drawn references to how organisations could promote employee wellbeing based on my experience in consulting and professional services industry. Preparing ourselves to face this demanding and fast paced world is an important criteria that can make or break one’s career. We have heard so many stories of people quitting or even take their life due to work pressure. Preparation should not be limited to job related training or certifications, instead we should invest time to equip ourselves with tools, techniques and knowledge of the mind & emotions to be able to meet expectations.

To be well is to thrive physically, emotionally and psychologically. A holistic approach that encompasses mind, body, intellect, memory and ego complexes is required. One of the key reasons for reduced performance at workplace is depleting energy levels caused by stress. Stress is too much to do in too little time, notwithstanding the fact that stress robs our mind from being in the present moment.

A recent research by gallop on employee wellbeing and daily stress is an eye opener and results are staggering. $8.9 trillion lost in global GDP due to low engagement and 62% are not engaged at work!! Stress is one of the key reasons for employees being dis-engaged which is directly related to the workplace culture.

The ability to recognise within that you are stressed indicates a good level of awareness and working on it is a real sign of growth. To ‘do’ anything we need energy, even to enjoy life we need to be healthy and fit. Stress reduces our mental and emotional capacity. It clouds the mind and reduces the ability to think clearly resulting in decisions that we regret. You may have experienced moments of strong emotions taking over us such as anger, fear, anxiety, jealousy, hatred, lust, obsession and greed, which are negative emotions.

Holistic health in the corporate world is the need of the hour and employers have an equal responsibility to invest and develop structures that fosters positive work culture. Making it a compliance obligation and sending out generic emails isn’t done. If this had worked, we should have seen more happy & smiling employees, reduced depression, and attrition.

An effective onboarding experience especially on what employees should be expecting in any workplace is crucial. Line managers have a responsibility to ensure new joinees are supported through out to ensure he/she is not successful but also not burnt out.

Conscious breathing and meditation is a gift to this world that has helped millions combat stress and tension. I have practiced the SKY© technique since the last 20 years and is simply the reason for my current success. The benefits of these techniques are multi-dimensional, and I’d recommend you check out the tlex programs: https://tlexmindmatters.com/.

tlex programs are meticulously designed not just to relieve stress but also to establish self-mastery. Watch a short video on how SKY© technique can combat stress: https://vimeo.com/102675317

Key points:

  1. Mental, emotional and physical health should be made top priority.
  2. Feedback on increased workload should be addressed immediately.
  3. Learn tools & techniques to manage daily stress and practice them – SKY© technique is recommended.
  4. Switch off from work when you have to.
  5. Learn to find peace in chaos as changing the external environment is unlikely.
  6. Engage in recreational sports and/or social activities that enhance your energy levels and enthusiasm.
  7. Conscious relaxing is a must (not sleeping).
  8. Choose a diet that keeps you sane.
